Due to the more recent Discord hack, the seriousness of which hasn’t been fully realized as of yet, it may be time to shutdown the MG Discord server once and for all. While Discord itself wasn’t hacked, their support portal was. In many cases, this includes email addresses, physical addresses, and possibly images of government IDs and credit card information (you know, the things people need to steal your identity).

There’s an excellent video over on the “No Text To Speech” channel going into greater detail. I recommend spending the 10 minutes and 28 seconds viewing it:

If that’s not bad enough, Discord has a new Terms of Service. If you accept it (which you have to to even login), you’re removing any legal rights you have in the US & Canada to damages incurred by this and any future information leaks. Personally, while I’ve never used Discord’s support portal, nor given them my government ID or billing information, I feel I’m safe.  However, I do make use of Discord’s API for the Matrix/Discord bridge, I’d have to accept their terms for the API to continue to use it.  I don’t accept these terms as written – and frankly, you shouldn’t either.

Louis Rossman chimed in:

If you have a group on Discord, I strongly encourage looking into other options. MG’s home for chat is Matrix. You can read all about it on our MG Chat pages. If you have a group on Discord looking to make a switch, Matrix is a good move – if you’re a gaming group, maybe MG can help you out.  Matrix is decentralized, feature rich, and constantly evolving.  Plus, there’s thousands of servers on Matrix you instantly have access to. There’s other options as well, like TeamSpeak which has some energy toward making a comeback.

Groups should consider taking control over their communications and not put their entire trust into these large companies anymore. Leaks like this are becoming “normal” but they don’t have to be.
